Even more reason not to be running Windows XP

Was just reading an article on the PCMag (here) web site about the conflickr worm that is set to be activate on April 1st and sitting at number 2 on the list of things to know is:

“2. The overwhelming majority of systems infected with Conficker were infected through a vulnerability in the Windows RPC facilities. This vulnerability was patched in October. If you installed that patch before Conficker came out (late December ’08) then you were protected and still are. If you haven’t installed the update then it’s essential that you do so. Windows Vista is technically vulnerable in this way, but the exploit is almost impossible to execute on it. Conficker is basically an XP problem.”

Due to the inherent security that was built into Windows Vista this problem is about pretty much all but mitigated.

SO… People.. Windows XP.. STOP RUNNING IT… ITS 8 YEARS OLD… Compared to any other OS on the market it has had an excellent life but its time to put it down now and the fact it has stood up for all these years is a testament to its design, but really there is only so much patching and third part add-on you can run install to keep secure before the legacy design become the greatest weakness…

Why i think Windows 7 starter will be Free

What you are about to read is only a hunch but i am so convinced that this is Windows 7 started will be free and here is why…

In the market right now you can get Windows Vista Home for about $190au upgrade which is pretty much the lowest version of Windows you can buy. But Windows 7 Starter is a lower end version of Vista Home (yes it can get lower than home) but Windows 7 Home is apparently only going to be sold in a restricted international market but Windows 7 Home will be “Available” in every country…

The restriction with Windows 7 Starter of not being able to run more than 3 programs at once is going to be absolutely loathed by anyone who uses it. Even if there was a small cost of say $49 people will still be think they are ripped off because all you are getting is a piece of cripple ware…

But

If you give it away free all of a sudden it sound like a bargin and the 3 programs at once cap does not seem that bad. On top of that anyone will be able to downloaded it for free which will encourage people to not pirate Windows which Steve Ballmer has recently publicly stated is the biggest competition to Windows has right now… The release of the started edition should also stimulate the lower end PC market as OEM’s will be able to load it on Netbook and sub $1000au laptops and cheap desktops and be price competitive with other free Linux distributions such as Ubuntu and RedHat.

I know there is another BIG announcement coming about Windows 7 in the works and while i think there are more features to be added to the Release Candidate i am sure that this Big new feature is going to be the price and not the code…

Tell me what you think? do you think there is any chance of Windows 7 started being given away for free???

Why Windows 7 is going to be released at the perfect time

As you all probably know Windows 7 is being released this year some time after June. This timing is going to be perfect for Microsoft even though it will be in the middle of a global recession. No really it will be…  Why?

1. Windows 7 is going to run great on pretty much any computer made in the last 3 years. People have been holding off on upgrading their system to Windows Vista for the past 3 years sighting performance and reliability issues (which is not true) but instead they are running Windows XP. Loading Windows 7 on these systems is actually going to make these computers run faster than then they already are now giving people a great excuse to upgrade.

2. Corporations are not going to wait for Windows 7 Service Pack 1 as all the feedback on the web and from Gartner is that this thing will be ready to rock from day 1.

3. The Netbook market is going to be huge in 2009 and Windows 7 specs are going to be spot on for such a low end device.

What do you reckon?

Are you getting duplicate GUID’s in SCCM OSD?

Are you getting computers with duplicate GUID’s in SCCM when joining computers to the domain. Then if it is a Dell check the service tag of the computer has been configured correctly as this is used as the seed to generate the GUID. To do this go to the dell support web site and search for the asset.com program and make a dos boot disk to set the Service Tag. You will need to use the secret switch “asset /s SERVICETAGHERE” to configure it correctly and then reboot to confirm the GUID has changed.
