Video Demo: Windows XP Mode Internals – Part 2 (Application Publishing Magic) – Within Windows

Looks like the XP Mode is done by back porting some RDP 6.1 goodness to XP to allow for seamless window integration. Also interesting to see is that when you copy a shortcut to the start menu in the XP session then this automatically get added to the Windows 7 Menu…. SUPER COOL

Dell Mini 10 now in OfficeWorks – Hands on test

Last weekend i had my first hands on experience with a Dell Mini 10 at OfficeWorks at Garden City while buy my Dad’s birthday present.… The look and feel was very good and i was surprised i was able to set the displays to 1024×768 (although this was not native). The bigger keyboard was definitely a lot more usable and the bigger true flat screen was an unexpected touch. I was also able to use the multi touch features of the track pad in this device even though it lacked native OS support as it was only running Windows XP.

One note worth of mention was the system were only $789 which is a whole $60 cheaper than on the Dell web site… Weather this was because they were lower specked i am not sure.

At this stage i am not going to buy one until at least the new upgrade are available such as GPS,TV & 720p.

Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 SP2 reaches RTM

In what might be a less anticipated release apparently Microsoft have finalised Vista and Server 2008 Service Pack 2… This is the first service pack for Server 2008 and second for Vista. Having run the beta of the service pack for many months now this is well worth the upgrade if only for the improved performance and stability. No word when it will be released however i am betting it will be released along with Windows 7 RC on the 5th May.

Office 2007 Service Pack 2 is now available with PDF built in

Microsoft has release Office 2007 Service Pack 2 to the web now… Most notably there is now PDF support in all the office products out of the box which is a real “up yours” to Adobe seeing they forced Microsoft to remove the feature from the product originally only to open the format up the day Office 2007 launched.

Here is a summary of what’s changed:

  • Service Pack 2 adds the ability to open, edit and save documents in version 1.1 of the OpenDocument Format for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. These applications now let users save, open, and edit files as OpenDocument Text (*.odt), OpenDocument Spreadsheet (*.ods), and OpenDocument Presentations (*.odp).
  • The 2007 Microsoft Office Service Pack 2 is the first service pack to support uninstall of client updates through the Microsoft Service Pack Uninstall Tool for the 2007 Microsoft Office Suite as well as via Windows Installer command line. The Service Pack Uninstall Tool will be available as a separate download.
  • The Microsoft Save As PDF or XPS add-in has been built into Office applications in SP2. Users no longer have to download and install the add-in separately.
  • When many graphic objects are present performance has been improved.
  • In many scenarios, expect increased print fidelity of graphical objects.
  • Improved interoperability using standard DrawingML markup to describe the visual properties of the SmartArt graphic.
  • Substantial improvements to Forms-based authentication support in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and SPD.
